Between 1992 and 2017, workplace robots killed at least 41 people in the US. It’s a stark reminder that robots have had the potential to cause harm for quite some time. As artificial intelligence evolves, so does the risk.

But now, we’re seeing a shift in robotics with the NEO Beta. This new humanoid robot goes beyond the stiff, mechanical designs of the past. It adopts bio-inspired technology to safely work alongside people. NEO’s body is designed with muscle-like structures, making it both strong and gentle, just like us. In other words, getting people to see robots as safe is key if we want them to be accepted as partners in our everyday spaces. In a promotional video, the NEO Beta is in a living room with a young woman, helping her by handing over her backpack. The interaction ends with a gentle embrace, a rare sight in human-robot relationships. And who would have thought we’d see the day where a robot could give a hug?

Design and functionality

The NEO Beta comes in at just 66 pounds, making it significantly lighter than other robots out there. By comparison, Tesla’s Optimus GEN2 is 125.6 pounds.

In terms of movement, the NEO Beta handles it all—walking, jogging, and even climbing stairs. With a walking speed of 2.5 miles per hour and the ability to run at 7.5 miles per hour, it’s quick enough to keep up with most tasks. Plus, it can carry up to 44 pounds, making it practical for a variety of uses around the house. This kind of versatility is what you might expect from a futuristic humanoid robot.

The battery life of 2-4 hours is solid for most day-to-day activities. Whether it’s helping with simple tasks or just navigating your space, the NEO Beta seems well-equipped to handle whatever comes its way. By the way, it learns and becomes more efficient as it goes.

Will futuristic humanoid robots become affordable anytime soon?

Professor Robert Riener from ETH Zurich sees great potential in making humanoid robots more affordable. He says, “Costs will be cheap in the long run. Such robots can especially help people with disabilities, or elderly individuals who need support and want to stay independent, or those who don’t have family to help them or can’t afford care.”

Adding some perspective, Narek Vardanyan from Gadget Flow compares this to the development of autonomous cars. “It took about 6-7 years after companies started developing autonomous cars in 2017 for fully autonomous vehicles to become a reality.” This suggests that while humanoid robots may become more affordable, it could take a bit longer for them to become a common feature in households. So, the prospect of having an affordable futuristic humanoid robot might take time to fully come to fruition. I don’t expect the NEO Beta to make robotics a regular part of everyday life just yet.

Many business owners purchase new software and other technologies because they see it as an investment. They spend money and expect to see a certain amount of value in return. But how can you be absolutely sure that your technology is saving you money or helping you generate a return on your investment? In other words, how can you tell if your business management software is worth it?

The Promise of Technology

When utilized properly, new technologies can save you money in countless ways. For example, some platforms are designed to streamline functionality to reduce errors and inefficiencies, thereby boosting productivity and cutting losses. Other platforms automate or eliminate manual tasks, reducing labor costs and expediting delivery in the process. Still others are explicitly created to identify areas of waste, so they can be eliminated or properly controlled.

The list goes on and on.

Obviously, software developers are incentivized to pitch their new platforms as being inherently advantageous for businesses. Saving money is typically near the top of the list since it has the potential to justify whatever you’re paying for the software. If a piece of software can prove that it can save you $10,000 a year, you won’t mind paying $5,000 a year to continue operating it. In fact, the decision becomes a no-brainer.

But the reality is not all business management software can save you as much money as they claim. And on top of that, not all software platforms are capable of saving you the same amount of money. If you want to make smarter software decisions, it’s important to discern the technologies most likely to save your business money in the long term.

The ROI Equation

Return on investment, or ROI, is the most important equation we have for determining the financial viability of a piece of technology. ROI is a concept studied in investing, marketing, and countless other fields, but it works perfectly well in this context as well.

Essentially, ROI determines how much value your software is generating for your organization, compared to how much it’s costing you. There are two sides to the equation: expenses and return.

Speaking broadly, the return side of the equation is about how much value the software or technology brings to your organization. Sometimes, this means adding new value to your organization, such as allowing you to produce new products or make your customers happier by expediting service. But just as important, we must consider how much time, money, and effort your technology saves you.

The expense side of the equation is simpler and easier to calculate. It simply represents the costs you expend to continue using this technology. Oftentimes, this means paying a subscription for software as a service. It could also include paying for licensing. But there are also some invisible costs that you’ll need to keep in mind as well; for example, does it take you several hours to train people to use this platform? If so, that’s a cost you’ll need to keep in mind.

So let’s dig in and figure out how we can use an ROI equation to determine whether your tech is genuinely saving your company money.

Identify Areas of Cost Savings

Start by identifying areas of cost savings. There are several categories of cost savings that you can consider here, including:

• Direct cost savings. Are there any expenses that this technology eliminates? For example, were you able to replace some human workers with this business managment software, directly saving labor costs? Are you able to fully automate something that you could never automate before? Does this allow you to completely circumvent another product or service you were using? Factor all these savings into your equation.
• Time savings. You’ll also need to think about time savings. If this technology allows people to work faster, more productively, and more efficiently, that’s clearly a benefit. But how much of a benefit is it? How much money are you saving in this regard?
• Opportunities to identify waste. All businesses have to deal with waste. This includes physical waste, time waste, and even wasted money. If your technology provides new opportunities to identify and eliminate waste, you should factor them into your ROI equation.

Evaluate New Costs

Next, you’ll need to evaluate any new costs introduced by this technology. Some of these costs will be obvious, such as the subscription fee you pay to continue using the software. However, you’ll also need to consider more insidious costs, like extra time needed to train people.

Is It Enough?

Once you crunch the numbers, you should be able to tell definitively whether your business management software is worth the investment. It’s also a good opportunity to explore competing options, as you might be able to push the ROI equation more in your favor.

Apple’s gearing up for the iPhone 16 release soon. While iPhone 16 Pro leaks aren’t as frequent as with some other brands’ smartphones, a few details have started to slip out from Cupertino. Meanwhile, Samsung’s had a busy year, recently dropping the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. But it looks like they’ve got even more up their sleeve. And on another note, Xiaomi might be entering the triple-folding smartphone arena, potentially giving Huawei some stiff competition.

Rumors can be a bit of a wild ride—often unreliable and crafted to catch your eye with conflicting details that leave you scratching your head. So, I’m here to sift through the noise and give you a clearer picture of what’s really going on.

Apple leaks

Apple’s big iPhone event is set for Monday, September 9, at 10:00 a.m. PST at Apple Park in Cupertino. They’ll reveal the iPhone 16 lineup, new Apple Watch models, and AirPods 4. We’ll also get official release dates for iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and other software updates. Let’s check out the latest leaks and what’s in store!

iPhone 16 Pro leaks and more

The Action Button is a new feature currently available only on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro. It’s super handy—especially since I use it to quickly turn on my flashlight at night without fumbling around on the screen. And the best part? All 4 upcoming iPhones are expected to have this customizable button. What’s more, iPhone 16 leaks suggest that the Capture Button will be on each of the new models, too. Positioned on the right side, just below the power button, it’ll make snapping photos quicker and easier.

For the iPhone 16 Pro models, the screens are getting larger, increasing from 6.1″ and 6.7″ to 6.3″ and 6.9″ for the Pro and Pro Max. Next, Apple is bringing the Tetraprism Telephoto lens from the iPhone 15 Pro Max to both iPhone 16 Pro models starting September 20. The telephoto camera uses a folded glass setup to reflect light 4 times, which gives it a 120mm focal length. Both the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will have 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom.

Apple is also introducing a suite of AI tools called Apple Intelligence. But don’t expect those to be available when the iPhones drop in September. They’re likely coming in October. And even then, we’ll only get a taste of what Apple teased back in June. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who tested the first beta, the standout features are “Writing Tools, Type to Siri, and phone-call recording summaries”. The Writing Tools are basically a more polished version of Grammarly. But it’s worth noting that similar features have been around on Android phones for a while.

Apple robotics leaks

Apple is diving into robotics to shake things up in the tech world and spice up its product lineup. However, they’re still figuring out how to best use robotics. Their first test is a tabletop device, codenamed J595. It combines a large iPad-like display with cameras and a base that includes a robotic actuator. This device might hit the market around 2026 or 2027, with mobile robots and possibly even humanoid models coming in the following decade.

That said, there’s still a long way to go for Apple and the robotics industry. Let’s be real—today’s robots are pricey and have some limitations. But if you’re eager to see what’s out there, I recommend checking out my teammate’s buying guide of the coolest robots.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 leaks

Android Headlines just dropped some images of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and S10 Plus. We’ve seen the Ultra pop up in leaks before, but the S10 Plus has been more under wraps until now. In the image, the S10 Plus is on the right—easy to spot since it doesn’t have a notch, unlike the Ultra, which still has one. The tablets appear in Silver and Graphite. That’s a bit of a change-up from last year’s S9 series, which only came in Beige and Graphite.

This time, the Galaxy Tab S10 lineup will only include the S10 Plus and S10 Ultra—no entry-level model. Samsung might be saving that for their more budget-friendly options, like the Galaxy Tab A or last year’s Galaxy Tab S9 FE.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 release date

The Galaxy Tab S10 is expected to launch in October. The Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and S10 Ultra recently got their 3C certification, which is like China’s FCC. That usually means the launch is coming up soon. So, if you’ve been waiting for a top-tier Samsung tablet or a solid mid-range Samsung phone, your patience might be rewarded soon!

Xiaomi triple-folding smartphone leaks

Huawei is busy developing a triple-folding smartphone, and now it looks like they’ve got some competition. According to a report from the Chinese tipster Smart Pikachu, Xiaomi is also working on a tri-fold phone. While there’s no concrete proof yet, the source’s solid track record adds some credibility to the news.

The tipster suggests that Xiaomi’s new phone will be part of the Mix series and might make its debut, or at least a prototype, at the Mobile World Congress in February 2025. Keep in mind, though, that this is more of an educated guess at this point. Unfortunately, we don’t have any details on the device’s specs just yet, so we’ll have to wait for more information.
